Plane Driven

The video here includes clips from some fun moments while traveling from Creswell, Oregon to visit Scaled Composites in Mohave, California. The Plane Driven project was presented to many Scaled employees, while several people on the Plane Driven team were able to explore some local roadable efforts. PD-2 continued on across the country to Florida for the holiday season.

PD-2 racks up over 100 more road miles, driving from Creswell, Oregon to Aurora, Oregon, with excellent results of durability and road handling characteristics.

Plane Driven PD-2 shows off it’s flying and driving in this new video.

As the Plane Driven PD-2 undergoes revisions to reduce weight and streamline transition time, we get the opportunity to see how a new engine frame and gear ratio performs on the highway in Oregon.

PD-2 flies from Fort Myers, Florida to Oshkosh, Wisconsin and on to Seattle, Washington.  Flight and drive modes are displaying good performance. Current focus is on reducing aerodynamic drag in flight, reducing transition time between drive and flight modes and to refine the rear drive system.

PD-2 shows the joy of driving an aircraft on the road, from and to the airport.

The team at Plane Driven is happy to show how well their roadable aircraft drives in the real world. With the design goal of 140mph in flight already met, the current focus is to reduce the conversion time between driving and flying.

On the road again. The latest PD-X configuration has been driven with great success. Although there was a bit of discussion at the toll booth as to whether PD-X should pay auto or motorcycle fare, motorcycle fees were paid . There were many well received thumbs up on the road. PD-X is a beautiful site to see in the driveway at home and soon to be back at the airport for some flight time.

EAA’s John Nicholson caught up with Trey Johnson, the man behind “Plane Driven,” and learns about the history involved in pursing the dream.

The PD-1 featured in EAA’s Sport Aviation magazine.

The PD-1 is designed to perform as an aircraft first and a street legal vehicle second. By incorporating a movable and auxiliary drive pod, the plane maintains its original center of gravity. During the transition, the wings rotate back along the side of the fuselage, the tail hinges and vehicle controls are quickly snapped into place.
